RESISTANCE BREEDS FROM GRIEVING HOW WE USED TO IDENTIFY
A part of what makes our sense of self feel stable is being clear on how we identify with our surroundings. When the dynamic between you and those surroundings have shifted, staying there begins to feel unnatural. So if you’re ready to move on but you still have resistance to do so, remember that resistance is breeding from the feeling of not knowing who you are anymore.
When you move on from a group you once relied on for support, you’re also moving on from how you identified with the people of that group.
When you leave behind a role you once needed to survive with, you’re also leaving behind how you identified with the perspectives of that role.
When you remove yourself from a space you once felt belonging to, you’re also removing how you identified with the possessions of that space.
Change is hard because it’s more relational than it is external. Most of the time, we don’t grieve leaving the circumstance. What we really grieve is losing the identity we’ve become familiar with under that circumstance. You don’t have to worry about losing your sense of belonging and identity with change when you choose to leave those circumstances in a state that is grounded with who you are now.
