COMPULSIVE URGENCY SIGNIFIES UNPROCESSED EMOTIONS
Whenever we feel this restless pressure that urges us to do something even when there’s nothing to do, it’s because there is a build-up of unprocessed emotional energy. So instead of trying to outrun the fear of sitting with those feelings, try to figure out what emotions that compulsive need is tempting you to avoid feeling.
If you feel the compulsion to stay busy, it signifies that quiet pauses feel threatening.
If you feel the compulsion to move quickly, it signifies that slowing down feels unsafe.
If you feel the compulsion to excessively plan, it signifies that uncertain outcomes feel distressing.
Often, we mistake controlling our emotional discomfort through compulsive actions that make our situation feel mentally predictable. And while those compulsions may give our nervous system some temporary relief, it doesn’t solve the deeper wound. True emotional stability comes from allowing ourselves to be present with the unprocessed emotions our compulsive urgency is trying to ignore.
